Starting Your Plan

  1. Write down the date you want to retire and the age you'll be.
  2. Write down what you currently have invested (retirement accounts, brokerage, anything). If the answer is zero, write zero — that's your starting line, not your finishing line.
  3. Open your 401(k) portal or HR benefits page. Confirm your current contribution rate. If it's below your employer's match threshold, flag it to fix it.
